Cinnamon fern, bracken fern, legumes, and wildflowers thrive in the open understory created and maintained by fire. This area has received consistent prescribed fire on 2-3 year intervals producing a grass and herbaceous understory. Grasses include big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), and Indian grass (Sorghastrum nutans).

Year-round: Wild Turkeys, Eastern Screech-owls, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Common Yellowthroats, Pine Warblers, Eastern Towhees, and Chipping Sparrows.
Summer: Common Nighthawks, Chuck-will’s-widows, Eastern Wood-Pewees, Hooded Warblers, and Yellow-throated Warblers.
Winter: Golden-crowned Kinglets, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Cedar Waxwings, Palm Warblers, Song Sparrows, Swamp Sparrows, and Pine Siskins.
